Advent Children Questions and Answers

Hello people! My love for Final Fantasy VII never die out. I always find myself coming back to this awesome game again and again. Just few days back, for some reason, I went back to my old blog and started reading some of the old posts in regards to FF7. Then I was like "bam, wham... I NEED TO RE-WATCH ADVENT CHILDREN FOR THE 32894324TH TIME NOWWWW!"

and so, I re-watched. Even after so long, Cloud, Zack, Vincent and Sephiroth still captivate my heart so much. HAHAHA. Anyways, I've decided to post Q&A (PURELY BASE ON MY OPINION) about Advent Children that may seems confusing to people. After much research, I've found most of the answers I need to find (or figure it out myself). Actually, I kinda want to post this for my own reference sake (and out of interest). LOL.

Right from the beginning, here goes nothing!

Where was RedXIII overlooking at?
Migar. It look run down and deserted because it's 500 years after the original game play. Many things would change since then and obviously, the original characters are not around any more. Perhaps Vincent Valentine survive because he's an immortal. RedXIII is not an immortal, he just have a very long life span.

He found a partner!?
Well... yes I guess!? The cubs are obviously his offspring. But whoever his partner is, it is not revealed.

The seagulls that were shown flying overhead in the beginning of the movie.. does it mean anything?
It is rumoured that the 28 seagulls represented the 28 staff members of the production team.

What was the Turks doing at the Northern cave at the beginning of the movie?
They were trying to find the Jenova's head to bring it back to Rufus. It is to keep it safe to prevent it being used by others.

Who are Kadaj, Loz and Yazoo?
They are the remnant form of Sephiroth, reforms of sephiroth but significantly weaker. They only seems to live to find Jenova (whom they called "Mother").

Did the Turks managed to get Jenova's head?
Yes. I believed Tseung and Elena managed to pass the head to Reno. The chopper was seen flying out of the Northern Cave. However, I believe Tseung and Elena was captured by Kadaj and his gang because later in the movie, it was revealed that Vincent Valanetine managed to save the 2 from the gang in a brutally tortured condition.

....wait. Didn't Tseung died at FFVII after being attacked by Sephiroth at the Temple of Ancients?
He was seriously injured, but he did not die. He was assumed dead because he was not shown in the original gameplay after that. He was rescued by Reeve.

Who was narrating the intro of the Advent Children?
Marlene. She is adopted by Barret. Marlene's real father Dyne (Barret's best friend), who died in the original gameplay of Final Fantasy VII. Marlene seems to have no memory of her biological father. In Advent Children, she was placed under Tifa's and Cloud's care while Barret travel the world in search for oil.

At the intro scene, Cloud was seen standing afloat at the Forgotten City while he release Aerith into the water?! How?!
It was believed that the production team purposefully created this for a more dramatic and emotional feel, thus, disobeying the law of gravity in the show. Hahaha.

Who is Denzel?
He is a random kid from the other sector who managed to stumble across Cloud. Cloud and Tifa 'adopted' him and Denzel was under their care since then. To know more about Denzel, do go read "On the way to a smile - Denzel's Case"! Cloud believed that somehow, Denzel was lead to him by Aerith, to relieve some of his sin. Do go read "On the way to a smile - Tifa's Case"!

Where is Tifa working at?
It is their newly opened Pub called "7th Heaven" located at The Edge, a rebuilt city adjacent to Migar.

Why is Cloud "not here anymore" as mentioned by Tifa?
From what I've read, he took up delivery service for people all over the world, since travelling is difficult (for Mako energy is no longer used anymore). However, I presume that because he was down by Geostigma and the sin he was carrying, he went out to live alone (at Aerith's church), seldomly picking up calls or going back to see the children/Tifa. However, this seems to piss off Tifa alot. Heh!

What is Geostigma?
When the lifesteam burst out to save the planet from the Meteor back in the original gameplay, part of the lifesteam was infected by the Jenova's cell. This disease was then spread throughout the world, mostly at Migar. However, the disease is not contagious. There is different variation of how a person can contract this fatal disease. There is also no cure for it.

Why is Reno calling for Cloud?
To help Rufus rebuild the world.

What was the sword at the cliff symbolise?
It was the sword that Zack from Crisis Core who used to carry (Buster Sword). The original owner of the sword is by Angeal, Zack's Mentor who died in Crisis Core. The cliff which Cloud was seen standing at is the spot where Zack died, which lead to the reason why Cloud had the sword placed there, IMO.

Why do Kadaj and the gang refer Cloud as their "Brother"?
Cloud have Jenova's genes infuse into his cells for an experiment during Crisis Core by Professor Hojo. Because of this, they believe that Cloud is their "brother". They attack him at the beginning of the show because they believed Cloud got his hands on Jenova's head.

Why did Kadaj stop attacking Cloud abruptly?
I believed, IMO, that during the conversation between Kadaj with Rufus on the phone while Cloud is fighting with Yazoo and Loz, Rufus must have told him something in order to protect Cloud from being attacked. Thus, you can see that Kadaj suddenly called a halt to the battle (and also seen from the fact that he is not on the phone anymore) and the 3 stopped the pursuit.

Why does Cloud seems so weak in fighting? Didn't he once defeated Sephiroth?!
You gotta remember that Advent Children took place 2 years after the original game play. Most of the characters must have lost their touch in fighting, especially in dangerous situation. Plus, it doesn't help by the fact that Cloud is infect with Geostigma which cause him to go into seizure unexpectedly.

Where is Cloud heading towards to after that?
Healin Lodge. Which is where the Turks are (including Rufus). Initially, they resided at Kalm, until the place was overpopulated with people infected with Geostigma.

Why Tifa left a second voice message and reminded Cloud to "be careful"?
Turks work for the Shinra company afterall. Who knows what they have installed for Cloud? The Turks and the characters are not very chummy to begin with anyway!

Why Cloud locked Reno outside the house?
Easy. He can be an annoying ass sometimes :D

Why is Rufus covered beneath a piece of cloth?
1) To hide the fact that Jenova's head is on his hand.
2) To hide his Geostigma scar.
3) He calls for attention by covering himself with a piece of cloth, making himself more mysterious.

Rufus found Jenova's head right? Why did he lied to Cloud and told him that they did not find anything at the Northern Cave?
Simply because he need to find out whether Cloud is interested in helping them in rebuilding the world (or Shinra). Let's say if Rufus was to tell Cloud that they have Jenova's head on hand, Cloud would have reacted strongly. Rufus can't risk that given the condition he was in, can he? He is smart afterall.

At the Church scene, why Tifa thinks that Cloud will not fight alone?
To Tifa, she strongly believed that Cloud treated everyone as his family (She regard everyone as her family, especially Cloud) and trust that he will not fight alone. I think Cloud chose to leave and stayed in the church is because 1) He don't want to cause any worries and concern 2) He is overcome by guilt and sin 3)Maybe he is worried that the Geostigma is contagious . To me, I agreed with Tifa that he will not fight alone too. He just want to run away from the problem.

Why Marlene don't want to go home when Tifa suggested it?
It seems that it's been a long time since they last saw Cloud and they miss him.

What are the cards thrown on the floor by Kadaj infront of the President?
Tseung's and Elena's Turk Identification card. It was splattered with blood because as said earlier, they were brutally tortured by the gang. This is also to force Rufus in handing over Jenova's head.

What is the Reunion about!?!?!?!
The reunion simply means by bringing Sephiroth back by gathering people who are infected with the Geostigma. I am not sure whether the Kadaj know that by getting Jenova's head, he is 'reviving' Sephiroth, because throughout the whole movie, it seems that his devotion is only towards mother aka. Jenova. He only mentioned Sephiroth's name once at the later part of the movie and he sounded like he is actually jealous of Sephiroth.

What do Cloud meant by "I said we will live out both our lives... easier said than done..."?
Back in Crisis Core, Zack fought a furious battle with the Shinra and died in the end. He managed to keep Cloud safe by hiding him aside when Cloud was suffering from Mako poisoning and was unable to combat in a battle. In the end, Zack was killed. During his last words, he told Cloud to carry on his legacy and entrusting his buster Sword to Cloud. This is also the reason why in the beginning of the FF7 gameplay, the default sword that was given was called the "Buster Sword".

Back the church scene where Tifa had a battle with Loz, what was the thing that Marlene was throwing at Loz when Tifa was down?
It was a Materia. By the way, rumoured said that the Materia that Marlene threw was Holy (a Materia that was used to save the planet from the Meteor cast by the Black Materia). However, I disagreed to it. Holy was dropped deep into the water of the Forgotten City where the body of Aerith was rested. Even though it was never revealed that whether or not the characters have retrieve Holy, I honestly don't think they will mainly because the mission of Holy was done after it was released to block against the Meteor. There is no reason why they will need to take the effort and search through deep water. Additionally, the white materia, Holy originally belonged to Aerith and if I were to be one of the characters in FF7, I would want to materia to be 'buried' with her.

Btw, the idea was to let Marlene threw a rock at Loz but it was later changed to throwing a Materia.

Who/what is the wolf always seen around with Cloud?
No, its not the re-carnation of Zack! The wolf represented Cloud's sin and guilt (He put the blame of Aerith's death on himself, the current condition of the world it was in, the innocent lives he had killed unintentionally, and the inability to protect everyone). Towards the ending of the movie when Cloud was relieve from his sin and guilt, the wolf disappears :D

What is "Dilly Dally Shilly Shally" said by Tifa to Cloud?
It simply means "shut up and stop wasting time!" Hahahaha!

It was seen that Kadaj only captures the children infected by Geostigma to the Forgotten City. Why not the adults too?
For me, I strongly believe that the children is easier to deal with. Mainly because they are in need of desperation to cure their Geostigma and to relieve their pain. I also believe that the children have a weaker will and will thus, submit to the command of Kadaj as compared to adults.

Why does the black water turn black as soon as Kadaj stepped into it?
The black water that penetrated the water represented Kadaj's will. When the children drinks the water, it will then activate the Jenova's cell within them and help the 3 locate "mother". The gang was unable to do it since they are did not inherit Jenova's cell (they are remnant of Sepphie :D).

Woah.. wait.. Cloud sees Aerith and then attempted to ask for forgiveness?
He was Hallucinating. It seems that the Geostigma have that effect on him.

Who's the red-cloak guy who saved Cloud from the 3?
Vincent Valentine, of course! During the movie, he explained more about Geostigma and also explained how he managed to save Tseung and Elena at the Forgotten City and why the Turks got tortured.

Why Marlene seems amused when Vincent don't have a phone? and why does Vincent don't have a phone!?
Given the century which the characters live in, it seems weird even, not to have a phone! I believe Vincent do not have a phone mainly because he comes and he goes, living no trace of his whereabouts, thus unnecessary to get himself a phone. Plus, he had been asleep for so many years at the dungeon back in Nibelheim that I think he kinda lost touch with the technology.

Why Marlene got pissed off with Cloud when Cloud asked Vincent to sent her back home?
Marlene probably feels like Cloud does not regard her as a family, given the lack of concern and absence in the family by him. It pisses her off, she misses him, of course.

What answers does Cloud want from Rufus?
Rufus lied to him that he did not managed to find anything at the Northern Cave. Cloud probably want to find Rufu's hidden Agenda.

There was a scene where Cloud's phone dropped into the water and there was a playback of his friend's voicemail (Reeve, Yuffie, Barret, Tifa and eventually Aerith..) Aerith?! U mean, she left him a voice message too?
NAH! I don't think so. Don't be silly! Aerith is dead, there's no way she can call him, let alone leave Cloud a voice message. That would be creepy, won't it?! Do remember that the phone is dropped into the same place where Aerith's body rested. The production team probably want to let the audience know that in regards to Cloud's constant guilt and sin, she had never blamed him once for her death. Why at Forgotten City then? IMO, probably because it is the place where Aerith was killed.

Back at the scene where there is this large monument thing? What was that?
That was a Monument built by Rufus and the Turks, for the people to have something to believe in and "pray" for. It is also built to represent the people who died from the Geostigma. The Trio believed that the Jenova's head is hidden in the large monument as informed by Rufus (a lie).

What is the Summon summoned by Kadaj?
Bahamat SIN.

Why is Cait Sith not seen with his moogle but seen riding on REDXIII's back instead?
According to what I've found, it seems that it will take alot of work to animate the moogle due to the fur which was why they took off the moogle and placed Cait Sith on REDXIII's back instead!

Why is Yuffie so obsessed with Materia!?
She is nicknamed the "Materia Hunter" and she believed she will be able to protect her hometown, Wutai, if theres more Materia.

So why didn't the characters used Materia in the game to enhance their power?
In the noval "On the way to a smile - Tifa's Case", all the healing Materia was passed to Yuffie to help her hometown recover from any sickness. They believed that since Mako energy is no longer used, any attempt to use the offensive materia may be dangerous. Thus, all the offensive materia was passed to Cloud for safe keeping which he placed in a suit-case (not much of a safe-keeping by leaving the Materia sitting alone in the church uh!). But before they knew it, Loz had taken all the Materia with him in the earlier scene at the Church, leaving none for the characters. Therefore, even if they want to use any materia to help in the battle, there were none left for them!

Later in the scene, Yuffie was seen carrying lots of Materia on her hand. IMO, she probably managed to recover the materias that was stolen by the trio.

Why did Vincent Valentine asked, "Where can I buy a phone?"
Obviously he was insulted by Marlene's comment back in the Forgotten City! I guess he don't wanna be outdated. Hehe, cute Vincent~~ -loves-

A red ribbon was seen tying around Cloud's and Tifa's arm? What does it mean? What about the rest of the group?
The red ribbon was a way to remember Aerith.

Location of the Red ribbon?
Cloud Strife - upper left arm
Tifa Lockheart - upper left arm
Marlene Wallace - wears a large pink ribbon in her hair, which is braided into a ponytail (similar to Aerith)
Barret Wallace - lower left arm
Nanaki - lower left foreleg, above his bangle
Yuffie Kisaragi - upper left arm and on her shuriken. As far as we know, she is the only character who sports two pink ribbons.
Cait Sith - upper left arm. It is unknown if Reeve also wears a ribbon.
Vincent Valentine - lower right arm
Cid Highwind - upper left arm

What is the sword which Cloud is using?
It is a Fusion Sword, called "The First Tsurugi", which consist of 6 blades.
I am not much of a weapon fanatic, so I will link the information about his sword here :

Can Cloud fly? Why can he fight in the sky?
No, he can't fly. But every character seems to have the ability to jump extremely high. If he can fly, Cloud will not need his friends to push him up to reach Bahamut SIN to finish it off.

What are the limit breaks used in the movie?
Cloud (Note that the following Limit Breaks are used in this order of appearance)
1) Blade Beam
(against Loz's earth-moving attack in the Sleeping Forest and
against Sephiroth)
2) Braver

Why does Kadaj cried out in anguish when he saw the content of his mother?
The content was damage by Rufus and probably during the highway battle with Cloud, thus the anguish.

Isnt Jenova's head abit too big for the box?
When they say it's Jenova's head, it actually refers to the remaining of what's left of Jenova.

How did Aerith cast Great Gospel... she's dead, right?
Honestly, I can't figure this out. She IS dead. But I believe she was able to connect with the planet and be able to cast her limit break to help cure the Geostigma. Through research and reading through debates, the only conclusion I can find for her to cast Great Gospel so late is probably because her actions were stopped by Sephiroth OR it took her a long time to figure a way to save the planet. Afterall, she's a Cetra. Reading the Noval "Maiden that travels around the Planet", she was the one who calls for help in the lifestream to counter attack the Meteor when the strength of the Holy was not enough. So I believe that she can do it the second time, through the power of the lifestream. Anyways, if you look carefully, the water that forms resemble the lifestream that sprout out from the floor before bursting into a rain and heal Cloud from his Geostigma.

Why did Kadaj call Cloud a Puppet?
Cloud was not a puppet to begin with. He was just mind-manipulated by Sephiroth in the original gameplay that he was created by Jenova's cell. which probably leads to Kadaj thinking that Cloud used to be a puppet.

Did Cloud smirk!?!
Yes he did!!! IMO, I think he find the battle with Kadaj abit child play after he was cured from his Geostigma, and probably because he know he is about to reach his limit break soon and also probably because like what Tifa say, he found his strength back again.

What did Kadaj drink in the box!?!?
Probably the remains of Jenova which somehow, contain Jenova's cell. It activated the sephiroth's gene within him (since he is the remnant of him), thus, Sephiroth was created once again.

What is the black lifestream?
The black lifestream is the victims who died from the Geostigma which is controlled by Sephiroth.

Why is the final attack of Sephiroth called "Omnislash Version 5"?
Square probably re-edited the final attack afew times before they finally decided going with it. I think the omnislash at Advent Children Complete is called "Omnislash Version 6", there is definitely more continuous attack by Cloud as compared to the Version 5's.

Why did Kadaj called Aerith "Mother"?
He was in a semi-unconscious state and was dying. Since Aerith was a Cetra, she was able to connect to Kadaj before he joins the lifestream. For Kadaj, since Aerith did not aknowledge the fact she is not his "mother", Kadaj assumes so and found relieve as he return to the planet. I guess Aerith being a cetra, always have that effect of giving a reassurance and comfort.

Didn't Loz and Yazoo died along the highway from the explosion Reno and Rude made?
I don't think they died there but was heavily injured. Somehow, I think they manage to make their way to where Cloud was after defeating Sephiroth and shot him. Honestly, I don't think Great gospel was the reason why the trio died. It's purpose was to heal any one infected with Geostigma, it's a defensive limit break. To begin with, the trio did not have Jenova's cell within them. I will stick to the point that they are heavily injured and join the lifestream after Cloud defeated them.

Why did Cloud called Aerith "Mother" too!?
Aerith always seem to have that motherly figure in her. Somehow, Cloud was confused by the state he was in, since the trio have been calling him a "brother" and demand him to return their "mother". Similar to Kadaj, Cloud probably felt the maternal presence of Aerith and mistook her as a mother.

Why did the girl say "It's like she said, wait here and Cloud will come back."? Did Aerith talk to her?
Aerith's connection to children was explained in an interview. That interview said something to the effect that the children retained a connection to the Lifestream since they had so recently come from it. I would think their connection to the Lifestream explains their ability to hear and sense Aerith.

How did Cloud managed to see Aerith at the end of the movie?
I suspect Aerith did made a ghostly appearance with Zack at the of the movie, not Cloud hallucinating. Mainly because after a string of event, everyone is reunited at her church. I think she wanted to give a last word of encouragement and support to Cloud. aww...

Aerith and Zack were seen walking out of the church together... are they back into a relationship?
No they are not. If you read "The maiden that travels the planet", she managed to find Zack in the lifestream but even so, the affection for him is no longer there. It's been too long since she last saw him. I think their appearance together in Advent Children is simply because they are both connected to Cloud.

OMG. I can't believe I did this. Hope all these helps! =3
